There is a 30 minute training that regardless of whether you provide active listening skills to members of the community, it is a good way to further your understanding of how to best help others and be an active listener. This project requires commitment and if you take a chat be ready to dedicate time to it.

Distributed proofreaders

Brief description: Distributed proofreaders is a website where you can volunteer as a proofreader to speed up creation of E-books that are free and available to everyone. Proofreader provides a simple way to do this and every book that is finished gets added to the gutenberg project archive which is a purely volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural books. This also has no time commitment and you can do as much as you want when you want.

VOLUNTEERING

Brief description: Be my eyes is a program where you can help people with visual impairment and requires no skill apart from having a strong wifi connection. This works by you signing in and when a request for help comes the app will notify you and you can accept and you will enter a video call where you can see and guide them. There is no age or time requirement however if you choose to help someone make sure that you complete your task and that the person is able to reach a position where they don’t require your help anymore

Learn To Be

Brief description: Learn to be is a great opportunity not only to complete official community service hours at any age including under 18 (you will require consent form parents) but one can also register to get tutored at no cost. You can sign up as a tutor and once accepted you can choose the subjects you are able to teach at the right level and you can look through the many students and choose who you believe you will be able to teach. You then contact them and set up a study schedule done over video call making it extremely convenient for all parties involved. Once you pick a student this will have a time commitment however you can contact them and vary the timings to suit your schedule.

Brief description: Missing maps is an initiative to increase the understanding of the constantly changing landscape of areas around the world. It works in 3 simple steps. Step one is as a remote volunteer you can trace satellite imagery onto open street maps. Step 2 is Local community volunteers then add to local street names and community areas. All of this is then used in step 3 by Humanitarian organizations to plan risk reduction and disaster response which actually helps save lives. Has no time commitment or age requirements, you don’t need to be a skilled mapper either.

Learning Ally

Brief description: Learning ally is a program that supports students that have learning difficulties such as dyslexia as well as visual impairment. To help overcome their difficulties and stay on track with their students the organization has a dedicated library of audiobooks of many different textbooks as well as important, education linked pieces of literature that helps the students stay independent. There are 3 simple ways to volunteer on this website, you can either record audiobooks as a narrator, provide feedback to narrators on their work as a listener or even just ensure that the recordings are of high quality and help eliminate mistakes
